Hungarian Goulash

Hungarian Goulash in Budapest

If you only taste one Hungarian dish, chances are it'll be this one

Goulash is one of Hungary's best-known dishes, and almost every tourist arriving in Budapest comes across the name. At Drum Café we've been making classic Hungarian food in the heart of Budapest since 2006 — and goulash is, of course, one of the stars of our menu.

So what exactly is Hungarian goulash?

Abroad, the word “goulash” often means a thick, stew-like dish. In Hungary, though, gulyásleves really is a soup: a hearty, well-spiced dish with beef, vegetables, potatoes and paprika.

Pörkölt, on the other hand, is a thicker, saucy meat dish, usually eaten with a side such as dumplings (galuska).

If you want to taste real Hungarian goulash in Budapest, this is a difference worth knowing.
