Classic Hungarian Dishes in Budapest

Goulash, stew, chicken paprikash — the flavours that make Hungarian cooking worth getting to know

Hungarian food is hearty, well-spiced and not exactly famous for small portions. 🙂 If you're in Budapest, there are a few classic dishes worth trying at least once. At Drum Café we've been cooking Hungary's best-known dishes since 2006 — and alongside the traditional ones, you'll find our own versions too.

Beef Stew (Marhapörkölt)

Pörkölt is one of the staples of Hungarian cooking: slow-cooked meat in a thick, paprika-rich sauce. Important: it's not the same as goulash. While Hungarian goulash is a soup, pörkölt is a thicker meat dish eaten with a side.

You'll find several versions here — in a bread bowl, with rice, and as one of our most popular dishes:

Beef Stew Budapest Style — beef stew with home made bacon-and-spring-onion dumplings.

Chicken Paprikash with Dumplings

One of Hungary's best-known home-style dishes. Tender chicken, a creamy paprika sauce and dumplings — simply the kind of food you're glad to have a big plate of.

Wiener Schnitzel

A breaded cutlet fried until crisp, and a long-standing classic of Hungarian restaurants and family lunches too. If you'd like something more familiar alongside the Hungarian specialities, you can't really go wrong with this.

Goulash

Perhaps Hungary's most famous dish. Classic goulash soup is made with beef, vegetables, potatoes and paprika. At Drum Café you can also try it served in a bread bowl.

Lángos

Freshly fried yeast dough, classically topped with garlic, sour cream and cheese. Alongside the traditional lángos, you'll find our own specialities here too — like the Black Lángos, the Lángos Burger and the Lángos Lasagne.

Not sure what to choose?

If it's your first time in Hungary, start with the dishes that are truly typical of Hungarian cooking: a goulash, a stew, chicken paprikash or a freshly fried lángos.

And if there are a few of you, order several dishes — that way you don't have to choose. 🙂
